Growth shares rules change: what has moved and when
Updated
A growth share's gain on exit is usually taxed as capital gains, so changes to those rates change what the hurdle is worth to the holder.
Describe my growth share plan Describe the company, the growth share class and when the shares go out, and we can pass it to a tax adviser or share valuer. The HMRC rules and deadlines are set out on these pages; which of them fit your plan is for the adviser or valuer to say.
The 2016 capital gains tax cut, since superseded
GOV.UK records that from 6 April 2016 the 18% rate of capital gains tax fell to 10% and the 28% rate to 20%, except on gains on residential property that do not qualify for private residence relief, and on carried interest. Those were the 2016 rates, not today's: from 6 April 2026 GOV.UK sets Capital Gains Tax at 18% on gains within the basic rate band and 24% above it, and Business Asset Disposal Relief at 18%, up from 14% in 2025-26.
EMI timing rules
HMRC's EMI manual notes the window after a disqualifying event is 90 days, where it was 40 days before 17 July 2013.
